【Abstract】National separatism is a political appeal in the modern world system in which basic political unit is a nation-state,and is a particular representation of the concept of nationalism that appeals for a congruency between the national and state boundary.In the context of that multi-national state is a predominant phenomenon of the modern world,to emphasize the total congruency between the state and ethnicity and,hence,to ask the separation from an existent state,is a serious challenge to the existent international structure and order and dangerous t hreat to the regional security and social stability. This paper uses the lasting achievement , in which t he foreign researcher s st udy t he origin and functionof ethnicity , and relationship between the ethnicity and national separatism , for reference to analyze the relationship between t he ethnicity and national separatism , between national separatism and modern world system , national separatists ’ truly objective , and the theoretical dilemma and practical obstacle of t he national separatism. The aut hor argues that the suitable approach to treating the national separatism is to reinforce the democratic constitution , to imp rove instit utional flexibility of multinational state , and to alleviate contradictions.
