The transformation of English into a Chinese language
Despite its status as the most popular foreign language, English pedagogy in China has often been critiqued for its lack of effectiveness. In this article, I examine Chinese foreign language pedagogies at the classroom and individual learner levels and argue that they are aimed less at producing fluent speakers and more towards an experience of foreignness. Ultimately, pedagogy transforms a supposedly foreign language into a uniquely Chinese communicative form.
