1908年到1932年，汉学家，社会学家Sidney Gamble (1890-1968)为进行社会经济领域的调查四次来到中国，从东北辽宁到南边的广东，再到西部的四川，Gamble拍摄了大量反映上世纪初叶中国的照片，有很大史料价值。
美国杜克大学图书馆，将Gamble拍摄的1917-1932间的5000幅照片进行了数字化。现免费向公众开放。
