ABSTRACT
This presentation studies contemporary financial imagination by analyzing the practices of valuation and investment of financial professionals in New York, Paris and Shanghai. Financial employees use common methodologies worldwide, that contain contradictions and multiple possible interpretations, and are not mobilized in the same way by each person, each professional group and within each company. These techniques actually refer, in theory and in everyday practice, to different and sometimes conflicting imaginaries about financial justice, identity and the global. The presentation discusses methodological and theoretical issues concerning the need for interdisciplinary dialogue in order to use participant observation when studying global phenomena such as financial flows.
